This work is set in Britain in early 1944, following the story of the 220th Fighter Group of the US Eighth Air force during the days preceding the Allied invasion of Europe. Deighton depicts a love story between pilot Captain James Farebrother and the English Victoria Cooper. The novel is based at a fictional airfield in Norfolk called Steeple Thaxted. Critics have praised this novel in successfully evoking the wartime attitudes of people in Britain.

'Goodbye Mickey Mouse' gets its name from one of the plot-lines in the novel, being Lieutenant Mickey Morse's attempt to be the first American pilot to break Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 kills from World War One.
