Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
The first editions, first impressions of these works. A fascinating trio of travel memoirs from prolific English writer Eric Newby.
Complete with the publisher's unclipped dust wrappers.
A Traveller's Life (1982) - Chronicles his varied life and adventures around the world as a soldier, sailor, salesman, and editor. From Newby's early childhood to his leaving his job at The Observer as Travel Editor, in 1973.
A Small Place in Italy (1994) - In 1967, Eric Newby and his wife Wanda acquired an old run-down farmhouse in Italy, I Castagni (The Chestnuts), in the foothills of the Apuan Alps on the borders of Liguria and northern Tuscany. The book is a personal memoir of the couple's experiences in renovating the house.
Departures and Arrivals (1999) - A charming stand-alone collection of (mostly) travel tales and reminiscences of Newby's earlier life. With pieces about England, India, Italy, Yemen, Turkey and Holland, among many other places.
Condition
In the original cloth bindings. With the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, excellent, with shelf wear only. Dust wrappers are very smart, with sunning to the spines of 'Departures' and 'Travellers'. Rubbing to the gilt title to 'Small Place'. General bumping to the edges of the wraps. Internally, firmly bound, with an ownership bookplate tipped-in to the title page of 'Travellers', otherwise bright and clean.
