A faithful facsimile of Joseph Bank's original journals.
These two volumes contain the journals of English botanist and natural scientist Sir Joseph Banks, who was onboard Captain James Cook's expedition to the South Pacific Ocean on HMS Endeavour, exploring Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. During their time in Brazil, Banks made the first scientific description of the now common garden plant 'bougainvillea'.
Though these journals primarily focus on the Endeavour voyage, Banks does also record notes on his life.
Bank was an important naturalist, whose advice to King George III regarding Kew Gardens led to it being the world's leading botanical garden.
Volume I illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece and twenty-six plates.
Volume II illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece.
This edition with a commentary by A. M. Lysaght, a biologist from New Zealand, who is best known for her scholarly work on Banks.
