This is a lovely two-volume set of first editions from Indian novelist and three-time Booker Prize finalist Anita Desai, representing key stages in Desai’s literary evolution, consisting of:

Clear Light of Day (1980). This work was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1980, and is regarded by many as Anita Desai’s masterpiece. Set in Old Delhi, it explores the psychological and emotional dynamics within a fractured Indian family, against the backdrop of Indian independence and partition.

Baumgartner’s Bombay (1988). This work is a darker, more philosophical novel compared to her earlier work, following Hugo Baumgartner, an aging Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany living in Bombay, haunted by his past.
