The volume is a monumental scholarly work focusing on one of the most important and lavishly illustrated Byzantine manuscripts, containing scholarly analysis of the iconography, style and theological implications.
The Sacra Parallela is a Byzantine florilegium or anthology, composed primarily of moral and theological excerpts from the Bible and Church Fathers. It's attributed to john of Damascus, though this authorship is debated.
Kurt Weitzmann (1904-1993) was a German turned American art historian who was a leading figure in the study of Late Antique and Byzantine art in particular. He attended the universities of Münster, Würzburg and Vienna before moving to Princeton in 1935, due to Nazi persecution.

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with the odd slight handling mark. Bookplate on rear paste down. Library label to backstrip. Internally, firmly bound. Blind stamp for General Theological Seminary (GTS) library in New York City to title page. Ink inscription to copyright page. Pages bright and clean.
