The Ice Age follows the experience of former BBC producer Anthony Keating during the 1960s and 1970s. Drabble drew inspiration from newspapers going on to reflect on the state of British society. Though it is a fictional work Drabble highlights the extent to which the media plagues everyday existence.

When published Drabble received excellent reviews for her tragi-comedy.
