A faithful facsimile of William Caxton's c1483 edition of 'The Game of Chess', one of the first titles to ever be printed in English.

'The Game of Chess' is an allegorical morality book on chess and society in the Middle Ages.

Caxton's translation is based on a book by Jacobus de Cessolis.

Illustrated with in-text woodcuts. This work was also one of the earliest books to be issued with woodcuts.

Bookplate of T. & M. James to the front paste down.

Condition

In the original publisher's hessian binding. Externally, smart. Light discolouration to the spine and to the head of the rear board. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
