What Our Customers Say...

Description

Author's Presentation Copy, First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed, Very Scarce, With Dustwrapper

First edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to the half title in presentation to Carmen Callil. Very scarce work. With black-and-white photographs throughout. A photographic record of the history of Melbourne, Australia. From colonial capital, through its growth in the 1870s - one of the fastest in the world at this time - and the gold rush the city was soon to experience. These never-before-seen images capture the heart of the city through important historical events. Compiled by Don Bennetts, an Australian television presenter and historian. From the library of Carmen Callil, an Australian publisher who founded Virago Press in 1973, to "publish books which celebrated women and women's lives, and which would, by so doing, spread the message of women's liberation to the whole population". Virago publish works by new and neglected female authors, publishing the works by authors such as Daphne du Maurier, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Margaret Atwood, and Angela Carter, all with a distinctive green spine synonymous with Virago.
