He has been called "the father of the political cartoon", with his works satirizing George III, Napoleon, prime ministers and generals. Regarded as one of the two most influential cartoonists, the other being William Hogarth, many of his works are held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Written by Richard Godfrey, a British art historian. Previously held in the library of the Laurence family, descendants of French Laurence, an English jurist and man of letters, a close associate of Edmund Burke whose literary executor he became. French Laurence is seen represented on page 159 in legal wig and gown.
