Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

First thus. Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous decorations. The Iliad is one of the oldest extant works of literature still widely read by modern audiences. It is divided into twenty-four books written in dactylic hexameter. Set towards the end of the Trojan War, a ten-year siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek states, the poem depicts significant events in the siege's final weeks. Attributed to Homer, an Ancient Greek poet who is considered one of the most revered and influential authors in history. Translated by Robert Stuart Fitzgerald, an American poet, literary critic and translator whose renderings of the Greek classics "became standard works for a generation of scholars and students". Illustrated by Hans Erni, a Swiss graphic designer, painter, illustrator, engraver and sculptor.
