Description

Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

Complete in five volumes. Second edition, corrected printing. Each volume is illustrated with in-text figures throughout. A comprehensive reference work, identifying, in alphabetical order, every plant suitable for cultivation in the British Isles, both outdoors and under glass. With additional notes on many tropical and subtropical plants included. This dictionary should prove valuable to gardeners all over the world, offering a different general account for each genus followed by descriptions of individual species and established hybrids. These volumes also include articles on garden technique and arrangement, as well as definitions of horticultural and botanical terms. Volume one contains A to CO, volume two CO to JA, volume three JE to PT, and volume four PT to ZY, with volume five being the additional supplementary work. Volumes one to four are edited by Frederick James Chittenden, a British horticulturalist, author, and first director of the Royal Horticultural Society Wisley Garden. With the supplement edited by Patrick Millington Synge, a British botanist, writer and plant hunter.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Volumes one to four are bound with the original unclipped dust wrappers while the supplementary volume has been price-clipped. Wrappers are smart with minor wear and the odd small closed tear to the extremities. Minor loss to the head and tail of the spines due to chipping. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout.
