Written by the notable historian of privateering and piracy Kenneth R. Andrews, who was was best known for his works that re-categorised Sir Francis Drake as a great corsair rather than a great admiral. This text provides an account of the expedition of royal and private ships which left Plymouth in 1595 under the command of Drake and Hawkins with the aim of capturing the city of Panama. The expedition ended in total failure, with both leaders dying and attempts to capture Grand Canary, Puerto Rico and Panama were all repulsed. Collated, complete with ten plates, one of which is folding, and two full-page maps. Featuring a loosely inserted letter to 'Richard Ollard Esq.' from 'T.L.S.', The Times Literary Supplement, asking the notable English historian and biographer for a review of this text. Also featuring a loosely inserted letter from 'The Syndics of the Press' (from The Cambridge University Press) also requesting a review. In the original unclipped dustwrapper.

Condition

In blue cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent. Very slightly sunned to extremities. Slightly rubbed to lower extremity of boards. Several small marks to rear board. Faint offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout with the odd light spot to the first few pages. Two letters loosely inserted to front endpapers. Dustwrapper, generally smart. Slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight chipping to tail of spine. Sunning to rear of wrap and spine. Mark to front of wrap, slight rubbing to rear. Small loss of wrap to tails of joints to front and rear flyleaf.
