What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps with spiral binding.

These volumes present a unique and charming snapshot of mid-20th-century British domestic life, reflecting the Women’s Institute’s commitment to rural skills, homemaking, and the culinary arts.

This three-volume set consists of the following:

The Country Housewife’s Handbook. Originally published in 1939, this copy is a vanishingly scarce 1972 reprint, and is currently the only copy available for purchase. This is a comprehensive guide for the rural housewife, covering topics like: vegetables, fruit, herb, flower, and rose gardening, livestock keeping (poultry, ducks, rabbits, bees), home winemaking and beverages, marketing produce, composting and manures, and practical domestic tips.

More Westmorland W.I. Recipes. Published c1972. This copy is undated. Dated here using Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. This is likely the first edition. This volume is regional cookbook featuring traditional Cumbrian and Westmorland recipes, passed down through generations of WI members.

Yorkshire Recipe Book. Published in 1980, this is the New Edition, the third impression from a print run of 5,000. This is a celebration of Yorkshire’s culinary heritage, likely featuring beloved recipes such as Parkin, Fat rascals, Yorkshire Puddings, and regional preserves.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps with spiral binding. Externally, very smart. The odd handling mark, scratch, spot and damp stain more prevalent to rear wraps. Very slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in one or two creases to wraps. Ink inscription to rear of "More Westmorland". The odd slight spot to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. One of two spots to fore edges. The odd spot of damp staining to fore edge of "More Westmorland", not affecting the text, and barely spreading to pages, and small ink inscription to title page.
