The plot revolves around a walking marathon in 1879, run by a shady promotor who gambled to make money fast, in which several of the participants are murdered. While the detectives seek a murderer, the race continues on. Written by Peter Harmer Lovesey, a British writer of historical and contemporary detective novels and short stories best known for his series featuring Sergeant Cribb, a Victorian-era police detective based in London, and Peter Diamond, a modern-day police detective in Bath.

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with minor wear and chipping to the extremities resulting in minor loss to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light age toning due to paper quality.
