This is a faithful facsimile reproduction of Bourne’s London and Birmingham Railway was first published in 1839, just a few years after the railway's completion. First edition, thus. It was one of the earliest and most important visual records of this major British railway line.
This edition includes 31 plates, including a frontispiece and two maps. Collated, complete.
The London and Birmingham Railway was one of the first major lines in Britain, completed in the 1830s and designed by Robert Stephenson. Bourne's original work features detailed lithographic plates showing: Viaducts, cuttings, tunnels, and stations alongside dramatic scenes of laborers and construction sites. This edition also includes descriptive text by John Britton.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Slight fading to spine. Dust wrapper, smart. One or two small closed tears and chips, particularly to head and tail of spine. The odd spot to extremities. One or two very slight handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
