This was among the most celebrated Victorian illustrated books on railway engineering. It documented the construction and early operation of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Great Western Railway (GWR), known for its pioneering broad-gauge line.
Depicting sweeping images of the many stations along the Great Western Line, this work presents scenic views of the countryside, towns, and industry from Hanwell to Bristol. Locations include Chippenham, Swindon, Box, Bathford, Bathampton, Windsor and Slough. Bourne writes that many of the beautiful structures along the track are missed by passengers due to the 'straightness of the railway'.
Printed by David and Charles reprints of Newton Abbot, who produced many transport facsimile works.
