First Edition.

In the original unclipped dust wrapper.

Illustrated with a colour frontispiece as well as fifteen colour plates, and over four-hundred full page and in-text black-and-white illustrations.

This is an informative work on furniture, particularly focusing upon its origins and evolution from 3100 to 475 BCE. The author, Hollis S. Baker, believed that proper attention had not been paid to ancient furniture and that 'a knowledge of the art forms and techniques of the past is essential to an understanding of the present'.

Contents focus upon Egypt, The Near East, and the Aegean, with chapters such as 'The Early Beginnings', 'The Furniture of Hetepheres', 'Household furniture types', and 'The Minoan ascendancy'.

Written by Hollis S. Baker, the founder of Baker Furniture who achieved overnight popularity following the 1925 Paris Exposition.

With an introduction by Sir Gordon Russell (1892-1980), an English designer, craftsman and educationist who was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and eventually became the director of the Council of Industrial Design.
