Volume IV from the Amateur Astronomer's Library.

With the original unclipped dust wrapper.

Includes twenty four monochrome plate illustrations in addition to ten charts and more than fifty line diagrams. Collated complete. Among the plates included in the work are the photographs captured by Horace Edward Stafford Dall on 21st April 1956 of Jupiter showing a very rare triple shadow transit of Io, Ganymede and Callisto. H. E. Dall was a major figure in the field of planetary photography between the 1940s and 1970s.

This is an invaluable amateur guide to astronomy edited by the beloved amateur astronomer Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore. Moore was co-founder and president of the Society for Popular Astronomy and published a number of significant works on astronomy, however remains most famous for having been the permanent host of the BBC television series The Sky at Night from 1957 until his death in 2012. His Practical Amateur Astronomy seeks to encourage other serious amateurs to devote themselves to the field and includes specific chapters on astronomical recording, lunar observation, the Aurora, and radio astronomy.

Condition

Full bound in the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, very excellent with just a touch of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Wrapper is lightly age toned with a few minor handling marks to its rear and some edgewear, including a few closed tears. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a trifle age toned, however are generally bright and clean barring a couple of small marks.
