First edition. With a handwritten letter signed by the author, inserted into the original envelope which is pasted to the rear pastedown. The letter begins: "I am most grateful for your very kind letter telling me how much you had enjoyed the Antarctic story. The appreciation of a reader is most encouraging", dated 25th October, 1963. Illustrated with a frontispiece and forty-one images across twenty-four plates. Collated complete. The story of a British research team in the Southern Seas, being a vivid account of the work of Discovery II and other British vessels alongside the officers who sailed in them. This work provides a commentary on the resourcefulness and dedication of these ships' companies under extreme conditions. Written by John Coleman-Cooke, an English researcher who was appointed to the Council for Nature and was a member of the Standing Committee on National Parks.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with light wear and the odd small closed tear to the panel edges. Minor sunning to the spine. A newspaper cutting pasted to the reverse of the front fly leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light spotting, predominantly to the fore-edge. Envelope pasted to the rear pastedown.
