Description

First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

First edition. Loosely based on Burgess's own experiences during his time in Brunei, on the island of Borneo between 1958 and 1959. This work follows the amorous adventures of an Italian father and son as they work on the marble of a mosque that is under construction; interestingly, the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque was being constructed while Burgess was in Brunei and is the design of an Italian architect. With a hilarious climax which coincides with the unexpected arrival of the rains and the ceremonial opening of the mosque, this exotic novel is both amusing and engaging. Written by John Anthony Burgess Wilson, who published under the name Anthony Burgess, was a British writer and composer best known for his dystopian satire A Clockwork Orange.
