Written by famed English writer, journalist and spy, Daniel Defoe, who was just five-years-old when the bubonic plague appeared in London. 'A Journal of the Plague Year' was published under the initials H. F., leading people to believe it was based on the journals of Defoe's uncles, Henry Foe, who lived in the Whitechapel district of East London during the plague.
The full description of the work entitled it as 'A Journal of The Plague Year, being observations or memorials of the most remarkable occurrences, as well public as private, which happened in London during the last great visitation in 1665'. This work is told from the perspective of an eye-witness account.
