Mixed editions with volume I being the second impression of the fourth cheap edition (1968), volume II being the second impression of the fifth edition (1968), volume III being the first impression of the third edition (1967), and volume IV being the first edition (1958). Volume one is illustrated with ten maps and genealogical tables; volume two is illustrated with five maps and genealogical tables; volume three is illustrated with nineteen maps and genealogical tables; and volume four is illustrated with thirteen maps. Collated complete. A detailed and comprehensive history of the English-speaking peoples of the world, telling the story of the language from pre-history to the most recent of history. Volume one explores the Birth of Britannia, describing the strife and turmoil inevitable in the making of a nation. Beginning with tribal law and ending with the development of Britain as a nation. Volume two follows with The New World, describing the experiences and discoveries of Britain as they take to the sea. Covering two centuries of exploration of new lands, alongside the development of belief, poetry, and the arts. Volume three contains The Age of Revolution, opening with William of Orange as the King of England as the result of the Revolution of 1688, and building to the Napoleonic Wars, a time rich in modern history. Volume four completes this history with The Great Democracies, taking the reader from the days of the downfall of Napoleon to the death of Queen Victoria and the beginning of the present era. A century which sees the British Empire at its highest peak. Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrappers are sound with light wear and chipping to the extremities. Sunning to the spines with the odd small mark to the panels. Small closed tears to the panel edged with sympathetic repairs made with tape to the internal side. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpapers.
