First edition. Held in original unclipped dustwrapper. 'The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold' is a fictionalised autobiographical account of a period of hallucinations the author experienced due to bromide intoxication. He experienced this in the early months of 1954. Waugh often referred to the period of the time reflected in this work as his 'late lunacy.'
