These are editions produced by the Folio Society, and are adorned with original illustrations by Joan Hassall.
In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding and paper covered boards. With the original slipcases to 'Emma' and 'Shorter Works'.
Jane Austen published four novels in her lifetime, and is now known as a writer who gave the novel its distinctly modern character, and its transition to 19th-century literary realism.
Her works are favoured for their plots that often explore women's social standings, economic security and marital decisions.
The set contains the following:
'Pride and Prejudice' (1957)
'Mansfield Park' (1959)
'Emma' (1962)
'Shorter Works' (1963) - With her novel of letters 'Lady Susan', as well as Austen's history of England and minor novels, such as 'Evelyn' and 'Jack and Alice'.
With introductions to each volume by Richard Church, an English writer, poet and critic.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter cloth bindings, with paper covered boards. With the publisher's original slipcases to 'Emma' and 'Shorter Works'. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines. Slipcases are also very smart, with signs of shelf wear and marks to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages.
