The first edition, first impression of this work by historian Arthur Llewellyn Basham, in a full morocco binding.
Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and eighty-nine photographic plates, alongside further vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.
The author presents 'A Survey of the Culture of the Indian Sub-Continent Before the Coming of the Muslims'.
Basham's work was aimed at a western audience, and presented an attempt to correct the negative stereotypes of India created by previous historians such as Thomas Babington Macaulay.
Condition
In a full morocco binding, with gilt detailing to spine. Externally, fine. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Offsetting from a removed bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
