First edition. Illustrated with six folding tables and six folding plates to the rear of the text, two of which are highlighted with colour. Collated complete. A study on printing of the Mainz Psalter, a psalter commissioned by the Mainz archbishop in 1457 which introduced several innovations and was the first book to feature a printed date of publication. With additional commentary on the Canon of the Mass or the Canon Missae, the oldest anaphora used in the Roman Rite of Mass. Includes exploration on pinholes and their interpretation, antiphonal print and technique, red and black prints, and the modes of setting. Written by Sir James Irvine Orme Masson, an Australian-born chemist who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield from 1938 to 1953.

Condition

In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light wear to the extremities and the odd small mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot to the endpapers. The odd small crease to the edges of the folding plates.
