Following the loss of her husband, Rombauer's children encouraged her to compile her recipes and thoughts on cooking to help her cope with her loss, creating the first drafts that would later become Joy of Cooking. Containing more than five hundred tested recipes and related commentaries, this work was intended for the homemaker, to provide efficient tips and simple guides. Written by Irma Rombauer, an American cookbook author, best known for this work, and her daughter Marion Rombauer Becker, an American illustrator, author, environmentalist, and arts administrator.
