Moray McLaren offers a literary and historical study of the celebrated journey undertaken by Johnson and Boswell through the Scottish Highlands and islands in their Hebridean Tour of 1773.

Drawing on Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides and Johnson's Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, McLaren examines the contrasting temperaments, observations, and ambitions of the two travellers, as well as the cultural, political, and social context of the Scotland that they encountered.
