First edition. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven colour plates, and forty-eight black-and-white photographic plates. Collated complete. A detailed account of the 1953 expedition to attempt the first ascent of Mount Everest, and the first confirmed to have succeeded when Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the summit on 29 May 1953. This was the ninth attempt of reaching the summit of Everest. Written by Henry Cecil John Hunt, a British Army officer who is best known as the leader of the successful 1953 British expedition to Mount Everest. With a foreword by H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh and chapter sixteen by Edmund Hilary. The appendices are written by various participants in the exhibition and comprise a diary of events and an account of preparations for the expedition including oxygen equipment.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is sound with light wear and chipping to the extremities resulting in loss to the head and tail of the spine. Light sunning to the spine with the odd small mark to the panels. Small closed tears to the panel edges with a 2" closed tear to the front fly leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot to the fore edge.
