With each plate retaining the original captioned tissue guard.

A wonderful, alphabetically arranged study of British birds by renowned ornithologist David Bannerman, the Curator of the British Museum of Natural History from 1919 to 1952. Bannerman provides species identification, distribution, migration, and breeding behaviours of each species discussed. 

For this work, artist George E. Lodge painted three-hundred and seventy-seven images depicting four-hundred and thirty-five species.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth bindings with unclipped dust wrappers. Bumping to back strip heads and tails. Fading to vol I rear board, tail of vol III boards, and head of vol IV boards. Uneven fading to volume V boards. Closed tear to head of vol I front wrap, with loss of paper to back strip head. Small closed tear to vol III, IX and IV back strip tails. Tear to head of vol IV rear wrap. Minor losses to head of vol VI dust wrapper back strip head and tail, with edgewear to head of rear wrap. Handling marks to rear wraps of vols I-VI and IX. Internally, firmly bound. Volumes I-IV flat signed to title pages. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
