Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
Twenty-three volumes. A collection surrounding the lives and relationship between Samuel Johnson and James Boswell. Often called Dr Johnson, Samuel Johnson was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". James Boswell was a Scottish biographer, diarist, and lawyer best known for his Life of Samuel Johnson, which is commonly said to be the greatest biography written in the English language. Boswell's diaries, letters, and private papers were recovered and published by Yale University, transforming his reputation. These volumes explore the lives of two great men, the historical time in which they lived and key events from this period, the great writers and thinkers working alongside them, as well as their own writings and contributions.
