Description

Colour Plates, Early Edition, First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

A very well presented set of eleven works from the 'Survey of British Natural History' and 'Survey of Irish Natural History' series', from The New Naturalist.

Each volume is in the publisher's original cloth binding and the original striking dust wrapper designed by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis.

This collection was created with the aim to interest the general reader in the wildlife of Britain, and to encourage the spirit of the naturalist. As well as this, the editors wished to bring a wider awareness to the importance of conservation and research.

This collection is comprised of the following:

'A Natural History of Man in Britain: Conceived as a Study of Changing Relations Between Men and Environments' by H. J. Fleure. The first edition, published in 1951.

'Climate and The British Scene' by Gordon Manley. The first edition, published in 1952.

'The Weald' by S. W. Wooldridge and Frederick Goldring. The first edition, published in 1953.

'The Sea Coast' by J. A. Steers. The second edition, published in 1954.

'The Open Sea. It's Natural History: The World of Plankton' by Alister C. Hardy. The first edition, published in 1956.

'The World of the Soil', by Sir E. John Russell. The first edition, published in 1957.

'Wild Flowers' by John Gilmour and Max Walters. The third edition, published in 1962.

'Mountains and Moorlands' by W. H. Pearsall. The revised edition, published in 1971. First published in 1950.

'Insect Natural History' by A. D. Imms. A reprint, published in 1973. First published in 1947.

'Life in Lakes and Rivers' by T. T. Macan and E. B. Worthington. A reprint of the third edition, published in 1974. First edition published in 1951.

'Ireland' by David Cabot. The first edition, published in 1999.

All works were published as part of the New Naturalist Series entitled 'A Survey of British Natural History', apart from 'Ireland' which was printed as a part of 'A Survey of Irish Natural History' series.

Highly illustrated with colour photographs, black-and-white photographs and line drawings, throughout.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding and the original dust wrapper. Externally, very smart, with most volumes in excellent condition, with light shelf wear. The odd mark to the cloth to some volumes, with light bumping and a touch of fading to the extremities. Dust wrapper's are all unclipped, apart from 'The Open Sea' and 'Mountains and Moorlands'. Dust wrapper's have light edge wear, with the odd chip or small closed tear. Light sunning to the wraps, mainly to the spines. The occasional scattered spotting, mainly to the reverse of the wraps. 'Insect' volume has a tide mark to the front endpaper and half title, with both pages stuck to the front paste down. 'Life in Lakes' and 'Insect' have protective mylar to the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with light spotting to fore edge.
