First illustrated edition of this work. Illustrated throughout. A collection of the fables attributed to Aesop, a Greek fabulist and storyteller noted for his tales characterized by anthropomorphic animal characters. Many of the tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. Retold, with literary commentary and historical context provided by Joseph Jacobs, an Australian-born folklorist, literary critic and historian who became a notable collector and publisher of English folklore. Illustrated by Kurt Wiese, a German-born book illustrator and writer, who illustrated over three hundred books.

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is also very smart with minor wear and chipping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout.
