'Across the River and Into the Trees' follows the star-crossed romance between a fifty year old US Army Officer and a Venetian woman thirty years his junior.

With the former owner's inscription of Henry Gibbs to the front free endpaper.

Despite receiving some negative reviews for its sadder elements, this was a best seller in America, with it being Hemingway's only novel to top the New York Times bestseller's list.
