The first edition, first printing.
In a far less common variant of the unclipped dust wrapper, featuring a monkey to the centre of the front wrap, rather than the more common elephant. In the less common red boards variant.
The work of children's author Elizabeth Upham, illustrated throughout in colour, with full page illustrations and vignettes by Marjorie Hartwell, her frequent collaborator.
Former owner's inscription to half title, dated 1950.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding with unclipped dust wrapper. Bump to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Inscription to half title. Light sunning to dust wrapper back strip, with small loss to back strip tail, and significant loss to back strip head and wrap heads. Closed tears to wrap heads and tails. Tape repairs to dust wrapper reverse at back strip and wrap heads and tails. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
