These volumes provide an historical perspective to the changes of style and material used in architecture across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. With individual and comprehensive information about buildings of all periods and their decoration, in every parish of each county. Edited by Sir John Betjeman, an English poet, writer, and broadcaster, and his close friend John Egerton Christmas Piper, an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. Betjeman was a passionate defender of Victorian architecture, helping to save St Pancras railway station from demolition. This set contains: Murray's Buckinghamshire Architectural Guide, 1948. With one hundred and sixty-six photographs and a folding map. Collated complete. Murray's Berkshire Architectural Guide, 1949. With one hundred and seventy-two photographs, six line drawings, and a folding map. Collated complete.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Original unclipped dust wrappers are sound with light wear and chipping to the extremities. Two 1" closed tears to the front panel of Buckinghamshire with a 2" closed tear to the rear panel. Minor sunning to the extremities with the odd small mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
