First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
A First Edition copy of Evelyn Waugh's novella 'Scott-King's Modern Europe', often known by its other name, 'A Sojourn in Neutralia'. Set shortly after the Second World War, the novel follows the story of Scott-King, a teacher of classical languages, as he travels through Europe. Discussing themes of utopia, dystopia, totalitarianism, and idea of a modern Europe, the novel is an interesting exploration of life post Second World War. Inscription from previous owner on the front endpaper reads, , 'With very best wishes to both of you from May Marsh.' Dated using Copac. Evelyn Waugh was a English writer known for his novels, biographies and travel books, as well as a journalist and book reviewer. Serving in the British forces throughout the Second World War, Waugh is a writer who was exposed to a wide range of people and social classes, and this is very much reflected in his work, drawing on his own personal experience. He is perhaps best known for his work 'Brideshead Revisited', and the satire 'Decline and Fall'.
Condition
In full cloth binding, with a unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart, with slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Slight rubbing to the spine. Minor spotting to the foredge. Spotting to the front and rear boards. Offsetting to the front and rear endpaper. Inscription to the front recto endpaper, 'With very best wishes to both of you from May Marsh.' Date stamp to the rear endpaper. Stamp to rear pastedown, 'The Times Book Club, 42 Wigmore Street. W1.' Dustwrapper is smart, with minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Rubbing to the spine and to the extremities. Small tear to the front of wrap, to the head, no more than 0.5 cm. Again, a small tear to the front of wrap, to the tail, no more than 0.5cm. A small tear to the front joint, no more than 0.5cm. Spotting to the rear of the wrap. Offsetting internally to the wrap, with some spotting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot throughout.
