Description

Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

First edition.

With the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.

Sisters Elizabeth Keith and Elspet Keith Robertson Scott joined hands to create this charming account of Korea after the two spent time there in 1919. The book includes criticism of Japan's colonisation of Korea before and during the war, as well as sketches of Seoul, schools, brides, military figures and eating-houses.

Adorned with Keith's distinctive colour prints, which very much align with the works she became popular for, depicting Asian life and culture and utilising the traditional methods she gathered throughout her travels. The text is written by Scott, who ran with the New East publishing company in Tokyo for several years.

Beautifully illustrated with a colour frontispiece, fifteen further colour plates, and twenty-four full-page monochrome watercolours. Collated, complete.

Supported with notes by other well-versed figures of the country, including Dr. James Gale (author of many works on Korea, where he lived for 40 years) and Dr. Alice B. Appenzeller, of Honolulu (who was born in Korea and was for 20 years president of Ewha College for women).
