This is the fifth of C. S. Forester's novels to feature fictional British Royal Navy officer Horatio Hornblower.

In this work, Hornblower is tasked with suppressing a mutiny onboard a Royal Navy ship. He succeeds, and with reinforcements captures Le Havre. There follow several adventures and a disastrous affair in France, with Hornblower's eventual repatriation and reconciliation with his wife.

Cecil Louis Troughton Smith, known by his pen name Cecil Scott 'C. S.' Forester, was an English novelist known for writing tales of naval warfare, such as the twelve book Napoleonic War era Hornblower novels.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. With minor shelf wear to spine head and tail, with fading of the cloth to these locations. Contemporary owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Small losses to head and tail of dust wrapper back strip, with some small chips to head of rear wrap, and light marks to rear wrap also. Small closed tear to tail of front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
