The first edition, first impression of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper.
Loosely inserted is a slip headed 'A letter to every boy who reads this book: A Man You Should Know', with a facsimile of the author's signature. Ink inscription to the front free end paper.
The third book in the series featuring explorer-soldier Captain Lorrington "Gimlet" King and his comrades. This series was published during and after the Second World War, and many of the books are also set during this time. Major 'Gimlet' Champion, one of Johns' commanding officers during his flying career, is considered to be the inspiration for the main character.
In this novel, Copper, Cub and Trapper investigate the disappearance of Gimlet, who had travelled to Scotland to view some property he had inherited.
Condition
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is very smart and bright, with a couple of small bumps to the boards, and a little fading to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Dust wrapper remains generally bright, with amateur tape repairs to the spine of the wraps, which is chipped to the head and tail. Closed tear to the fold of the front flyleaf.
