    Illustrated, Leather Binding, Limited Edition

    Bound in a smart blue half calf binding with cloth boards. 

    This volume is a limited edition, being one or seven hundred and fifty copies printed on rag paper.

    Illustrated with 44 colour illustrations made using stencils, including a title vignette and frontispiece. Collated, complete.

    A posthumous edition of Souvenirs d’un Paria, attributed to Balzac and cast as the memoirs of the Sanson executioner dynasty, recounting trials, executions, scandals, and political upheaval from the Revolution onward. 

    Although traditionally associated with Balzac, authorship of the Mémoires de Sanson has long been debated; modern scholarship generally considers them a collaboration or ghostwritten production drawing on the Sanson family archives.

    Condition

    Externally, very smart. Upper joints cracked, with spine slightly loosened at the head. Slight fading to extremities. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. One or two minor handling marks to rear board. Bookplate of J. G. Bonnin to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
