These lavishly illustrated volumes remain foundational studies of English medieval mural art, documenting and interpreting surviving church paintings in extraordinary detail.

The volume that focuses of the twelfth Century is illustrated with a colour frontispiece, 90 plates and a further 15 supplementary plates. Collated, complete.

The volume that focuses of the thirteenth Century is illustrated with a colour frontispiece and 216 plates, some of which are in colour. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Creasing to spine of "Twelfth Century." The odd handling mark to boards. Blind stamping to Public Library Hastings to lower corner of front boards. Spines slightly faded. Library annotations to spines. Bookplate of Hastings Library to front paste downs. Library stamps to front free endpapers and fore edge. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Hinges of the "Thirteenth Century" reinforced, with the rear hinge re-sewn. Library stamps to the odd page, including the copyright pages. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges strained in places, occasionally with binding materials exposed, but holding. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd minor handling mark and one or two spots.
