Connell's play 'does not hesitate to expose the overwhelming horrors of war and the reactions of sensitive men and women to the dangers of political, cultural, and material disintegration' caused by war.

Loosely inserted is a letter from an individual names Denise, a friend of the playwright. She writes to one 'Roger' thanking him for a pleasant evening, and informing him 'this is what Vivian wrote in my copy of the play: 'perhaps it is because of suffering but just now my thought reached such a far point of fantasy that I felt that if nothing was left of Europe but one small crater, and at the bottom lay two bones, if one struck them together and believed enough, that a spark might spring of their contact, and perhaps that spark might be love'.

This passage has been copied out in pencil to the front free endpaper of the work, and captioned 'written in Denise's copy'.
