The original catalogue for the auction of the renowned library of John Elliot Burns, an English trade unionist and politician, associated with London politics and Battersea. He was a socialist and Liberal Member of Parliament and Minister who later developed an expertise in London history and coined the phrase "The Thames is liquid history". Burns devoted much of his life to his interests in books, London history, and cricket. As a book collector, he created a very large private library, much of which he left to University of London Library. Being the first portion of the collection of books on London, from Sotheby & Co., a British-founded multinational corporation, being one of the world's largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewellery, and collectibles.
