Written and illustrated by Lucy Fitch Perkins, an American illustrator and writer of children's books, known best for Dutch Twins and its sequels in the Twins Series. Living in a poor area of Chicago, Perkins witnessed children from many different backgrounds learning together and this instilled in her an awareness of the task facing American teachers: to encourage these different individuals into one unified nation. Her idea grew into a series of stories, some with geographical backgrounds, others with historical settings, with the goal of increasing sympathy and understanding for each of the unique nationalities and the heritage left to them.
