Layton was instrumental in bringing good, moderately priced wines to the tables of middle-class Londoners. This set contains: Table for Two, 1943. Later printing, first published in 1942. A personal record of tips and tricks of dining and entertaining, full of charm and humour, providing practical information for success. With chapters on famous barmen, infamous waiters, outdoor catering, wine exhibitions, great chefs, and more. Five to a Feast, 1948. First edition. Describing the author's attempt to recreate a medieval banquet held in London in 1356 for his friends in 1946. Following Layton's post-war adventures in catering, this is a prodigal and astounding collection of facts, fancies, and historical fictions surrounding food.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light wear to the extremities. The dust wrapper for Table for Two is price-clipped while Five to a Feast remains unclipped. Original dust wrappers are sound with light wear and chipping to the extremities. The odd small closed tear with sympathetic repairs using table. Light sunning to the spines with the odd small mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light spotting predominantly to the fore-edge and extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper.
