First edition. Very scarce work. Illustrated with a frontispiece, twenty-four images across twenty-one plates, and mapped endpapers. Collated complete. A charming and fascinating historical study of the straw hat, with chapters on the early days, the English industry, the expansion of plaiting and manufacture during the French Wars, the plaiting industry, bonnet sewers, and the recent history. As well as a chapter on the ladies' hat industry and the present organisation of the Luton hat industry. Written by John G. Dony, a British economist and author who was the husband of Christina Mayne Dony, an English botanist and athlete.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor wear to the extremities and fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with minor age toning to the endpapers. A contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
