Description

Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

The Saint Giles Library, No. 17. Bell's uncle, Sir Frank Lascelles, was British minister at Tehran, Persia. She travelled to Persia to visit him, arriving in May 1892, and stayed for around six months. She called Persia "paradise" in a letter home, and her experiences are recorded in this work. Written by Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell, an English writer, traveller, political officer, administrator, and archaeologist. She spent much of her life exploring and mapping the Middle East, and became highly influential to British imperial policy-making as an Arabist. With an introduction from Victoria Mary, Lady Nicolson, usually known as Vita Sackville-West, an English author and garden designer. She was the inspiration for the protagonist of Orlando: A Biography, by her friend and lover Virginia Woolf.
