Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

An early edition of this work, originally published in c1938. The French edition and a scarce copy.

Detailing Jean Baptiste Charcot's polar expeditions, with various illustrations of photographs in black and white to enrich the narrative.

Charcot led a number of polar expeditions, exploring the Antarctic Peninsula of Graham Land, the Bellingshausen Sea, the Amundsen Sea [discovering Loubet Land, Marguerite Bay, Mount Boland, and Charcot Islands], Rockall, Eastern Greenland, and Svalbard. He tragically died aboard his "Pourqoui-Pas" due to a storm that wrecked the ship.

From the library of Eric Kenneth Prentice Back. Kenn Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey for many years.  He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations.  His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration.

Condition

In the original publisher's illustrated paper covered boards. Externally very smart with slight shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Kenn Back's bookplate to the front pastedown, with a bookmark named 'Le Petit Poisson et le Pecheur' loosely inserted to the volume. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are slightly tone aged, with the odd faint spotting to the very occasional gutter. Richly illustrated with photographs in black and white throughout.
