What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

A decorative translation of Euripides' tragedy, Alcestis. Illustrated throughout with numerous coloured plates. Limited to 360 copies, of which this is number 16. It was first produced at the City Dionysia festival in 438 BCE. Euripides presented it as the final part of a tetralogy of unconnected plays in the competition of tragedies, for which he won second prize; this arrangement was exceptional, as the fourth part was normally a satyr play.

Condition

In paper wraps with original glassine wrap. Externally, smart, with just a couple of marks. Some spotting to the wrap. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages are bright, and generally clean, with just a few instances of spotting.
